What is Shockwave Therapy?

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) delivers high-energy acoustic waves to tissues through the skin. This triggers a controlled biological response that stimulates tissue healing in tendons, fasciae, and calcific deposits.

Mechanism of Action

Shockwaves stimulate tenocyte proliferation and collagen synthesis in degenerative tendons. They break down calcific deposits in calcific tendinitis. They desensitize local pain receptors, reducing chronic tendon pain.

Evidence by Condition

Plantar fasciitis: strong evidence, 60–80% response rate. Calcific rotator cuff tendinitis: strong evidence for calcific resorption. Achilles and patellar tendinopathy: good evidence, especially when combined with progressive loading. Tennis elbow: moderate evidence.

Treatment Protocol

Typically 3–5 sessions at weekly intervals. Each session lasts 15–20 minutes. Maximum benefit is seen 3–6 months after completing the course, as tissue healing continues after treatment ends.
